The Muskegon Big Reds visited Ottawa Hills H.S. in soccer action Monday evening.
Ottawa Hills opened the scoring midway thru the first half on an indirect free kick from 10 yards out from goal. The Big Reds were flagged for a deliberate back pass to the keeper resulting in the free kick.
Muskegon responded minutes later with their first goal. Fernando Figueroa played a ball behind the defense for forward Diego Godoy to connect with. Diego beat 2 defenders and poked the ball into the lower right corner.
Godoy was not finished, he found the back of the net again with a hard driven shot from 30 yards out, finding it’s way just under the crossbar. The Big Reds carried the 2-1 lead into halftime.
Ottawa Hills came out in the 2nd half with more intensity, looking for that early 2nd goal. It took roughly 30 minutes, but they were finally rewarded for their effort with a penalty kick. Ottawa converted the PK and went on the score twice more before the final whistle.
“We played a decent first half with a player down” commented Muskegon Coach Jeff Holmes. “I thought we had the majority of the possession and created some good chances in that half. I reminded the guys before the game, and at halftime, that we have a loaded schedule this week with conference games. This one was non-conference and we’re playing with 10 men, so don’t get too carried away and burn yourself out in this one, we have bigger games this week. I still would have liked to have had us push for that 3rd goal to pad our halftime lead, but I feel good with what I saw.”
