The Muskegon Big Reds soccer team was back in action Saturday afternoon at West Catholic H.S.
Muskegon opened the scoring midway through the 1st half, when a handling was called inside the West Catholic penalty box. Brandon Nunez finished the penalty shot with a hard driven low ball to the right of the goalkeeper.
Muskegon’s lead vanished less than a minute later as West Catholic took the ensuing kickoff, and ran the ball down the field and finished the cross in front of goal. Muskegon threatened one more time, when a 30 yard shot from Jose Gutierrez forced the keeper to tip the ball over the crossbar. The hosts would go on to score 4 more goals in quick succession, taking a 5-1 lead into halftime.
“We lost our focus” Muskegon Coach Jeff Holmes commented. “We were happy to have a full squad on the pitch, we captured that opening goal, and I think we just lost our defensive composure.”
West Catholic showed no signs of slowing the offensive attack, eventually scoring 4 more goals to end the game with 10 minutes remaining.
“We clearly made some defensive mistakes, and had some issues with our man marking” commented Coach Holmes. “We’re going to work to correct each issue as it arises. We showed glimpses of potential, but we’re lacking the consistency.”
0-2 Muskegon will host Jenison in OK Black Conference action Tuesday evening.
